An elderly farmer was trampled to death by an elephant while he was working at his vegetable garden at Palasahi village under the Parjang police limits of Dhenkanal district on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Bauri Sahoo (63).
Following the incident, forest officials reached the site and tried to ward off the jumbo from the area.
According to reports, the farmer along with his wife Nandita had gone to the vegetable garden for irrigation where the tusker was already present since Thursday night.
However, they were unaware of the presence of the elephant due to fog. While Bauri was engaged in irrigation at one point of the garden, his wife was doing work at another point. During the period, the jumbo lifted the farmer with its trunk and trampled him to death in front of his wife.
