An elephant trampled a man to death at Kahliborei under the Hindol Forest Range in Dhenkanal district on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Pankaj Samal of Govindpur village. He had gone to his farmland in the morning when the animal attacked him and crushed him to death on the spot.
In another incident on the day, a carcass of an elephant was found at the Chandali Reserve Forest under Ulunda Range in Subarnapur district. Locals spotted the animal lying dead in early morning and informed forest officials about it. Though the reason behind the death of the jumbo was yet to be ascertained, it was suspected that the elephant was shot dead. Forest officials have started an investigation into the matter.
