A female elephant aged about four years was killed on Wednesday evening after being hit by a goods train near the Pattasahi railway station under the K Balang police limits in Sundargarh district.

While post-mortem has been conducted on the body, the district’s Banki  Forest Ranger has  written to  the Station master of  Bimlagargh railway station to ensure that  the  trains move slowly on this route as many elephants  are  moving  in  this  area.

According to  sources,  a herd of 12 elephants  was  crossing  the railway  track  at  around  7  pm on Wednesday evening when the mishap occurred. While 11 elephants could cross the track, a female one was hit by a goods train, which was on its way from Bimalagarh to  Patasahi.  The jumbo died on the spot.

“I have  requested the Station Master of the Bimlagarh  railway station  to  ensure  that trains  go slow on the route so that such type of  incident  will not occur in  future,”  said Forest Range Officer S Singh.
