Jumbo calf dies due to ‘behavioural hazard'

Published on:

The cause of the recent  death of an elephant calf( July 7) was due to  'behavioural hazard'  as per the postmortem report released  by Dr Madhab  Chowdhury  who had performed the postmortem.

Behavarial hazard is a term used in the wildlife science which means if there is an orphan calf in a herd of elephant then it is killed  by the tusker of that group.

Notably , in the ivory poaching case on June 15 held in the Baitaani forest of Champua   range,  two elephants ;one   female and another tusker, had  been  killed by electrocution and those two elephants  are believed  to be  the parents of  elephant calf in the present case.

On the other hand, internal discontent among subordinate staff in the department  is simmering  against DFO Santosh Joshi, who had taken action against a Guard and a Forester by putting them under suspension without waiting for the post mortem report.

It is discussed among the locals that the DFO is taking hasty decision to cover up the mismanagement in the department.
