A day after the PCC Kisan Morcha took the drought issue to the Governor, BJP Kisan Morcha leaders on Friday called on Governor Dr SC Jamir at the Raj Bhavan here and demanded a judicial probe into farmer suicides in the State.
The Morcha highlighted State Government’s failure in handling the drought situation leading to shocking incidents of suicide of farmers and migration in drought-hit areas.
Submitting a memorandum to the Governor, the Morcha members apprised him about the current status of agriculture and farmers and urged him to order a judicial probe into the farmers’ suicide cases.
“The Government has completely failed to tackle the drought situation. Neither it has taken preventive measures to handle drought nor ensures support to the farmers to overcome the disaster. As a result, unable to bear the crop loss and repay the loan farmers are committing suicides,” stated the memorandum.
The Morcha also blasted at the State Government for not yet announcing drought situation in the State and packages for farmers.
“Without any delay, special package for farmers should be announced by the State Government to avoid unnatural death of farmers and migration,” Morcha members urged the Governor.
