JSPl commissions India's biggest steel melting shop

The Jindal Steel & Power ltd (JSPl) commissioned the steel melting shop (SMS) and its allied unit of the 6-MTPA integrated steel plant here on Thursday. "The commissioning of the steel melting shop (SMS) is an important milestone in our project. With this landmark achievement, we are achieving a 2.5-million-tonne-per-annum (MTPA) production capacity in the first phase," said JSPl Executive Director (Projects) Angul Unit Dinesh Kumar Saraogi.

The electric arc furnace of the SMS is of 250 tonnes capacity and the largest in size in India and second in Asia, he said. last year, the company had commissioned India's widest 5.0-meter-wide plate mill under the project.

The SMS has highest flexibility for raw materials as it can use both solid hot feed and solid cold feed and hot metal feed. The hot DRI produced from the DRI plant will be directly fed into the electric arc furnace at 550 degree centigrade and it can maximise the use of hot DRI to reduce power consumption. The technology for the SMS has been proved by SMS-Siemag.

"We shall commission our balance of 3.5 million tonne capacity by the end of 2015," said JSPl Deputy Managing Director and CEO (Steel) VR Sharma.

The company has deployed sophisticated infrastructure and equipment capable of producing superior grade steel in the world. Construction of the five out of six units of the captive power plant of 810-MW capacity in the project has also been completed.
