The Banpur police arrested Chilika MLA Prasanta Kumar Jagadev on Tuesday after his discharge from a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, where he was undergoing treatment.

Jagadev was arrested on the charges of trying to mow down a crowd with his SUV.

Central Range IGP Narasingha Bhol said the MLA would be produced before the District and Sessions Judge Court in Bhubaneswar; and getting his transit remand, police would produce him in the Banpur JMFC court.

On March 12, Jagadev had rammed his SUV into a gathering outside the Banpur block office causing critical injuries to 22 persons, including police personnel. The crowd was present in front of the block office in connection with election of the Panchayat Samiti Chairperson.

Even though the police officials present there reportedly asked the legislator not to take his vehicle to the spot, he did not pay any heed and plowed his vehicle into the crowd. An irate mob thrashed Jagadev and injured him and severely damaged his SUV. He was undergoing treatment at the hospital since then in police custody.
