IOs to use laptops, smartphones for investigation

To make the State police more hi-tech, investigating officers (IOs) would soon be using laptops, smartphones and tablets for probe related works, said DGP Rajendra Prasad  Sharma on Friday after reviewing the Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) project in the State.

“We are now shifting from intranet to internet.

“Especially in those areas where connectivity is a problem, we will go for internet with all security features so that security doesn’t become a problem,” Dr Sharma said.

“The big advantage of this would be to have a seamless data flow and also to enable the investigating officers to use this system in their report generation through their laptops, smartphones and tablets. In the present system, we have to operate from the desktop computer installed in the police station building.

It is a very restrictive use. So I hope that the investigating officers can use this quite very extensively through their devices,” the DGP said.

It was also decided to increase computerisation of police stations under which computers will replace the manual registers including station diary.

Out of 612 police stations in the State, 589 are now connected online to the State Data Center in Bhubaneswar.

The remaining 23 police stations, mainly the Marine police stations and Energy police stations which are in the process of being established, police sources said.
