The Society for Geoscientists and Allied Technologists (SGAT) is organising a two-day international seminar here commencing from Saturday.

SGAT president Dr SK Sarangi on Thursday said at a Press meet that the seminar would focus on theme ‘Development in Mineral Exploration Techniques: Strategies and Challenges’. The seminar would focus on all factors that are stunting the growth of this sector which has all the potential to change the face of the economy of the country.

Sarangi said that only about 9 per cent of the country’s mineral resources has been properly explored till now. In answer to a question, he clarified that the shortsighted policy of the Government, which does not even allow exploration work in the forests and tribals-dominated areas in the name of conservation, is to blame for this.

Over 150 delegates from India and abroad are expected to attend the meeting and scores of technical papers would be presented covering many aspects of the technology related to the mining industry, Dr Sarangi said.
