Use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides has been impacting human and animal lives on earth for long and creating imbalance in the ecosystem for which agriculture scientists have now stressed on ‘integrated management of harmful animals’ as a big solution to these persisting problems.

This is what crop scientists said at a seminar held by the Orissa Environmental Society (OES) here on Saturday.

“Chemical fertilisers and pesticides were massively used to fortify food security during the green revolution in the second half of the 20th Century. Though all these helped in increasing productivity of the land and gave increased quantum of produces, it adversely impacted living beings in both land and water and environment,” they viewed.

Under the system of integrated management of harmful animals, harmful insects are attracted through uses pheromones and then killed. Similarly, steps are taken to control harmful insects through their natural predators, use of herbal pesticides and light rays.

The speakers also emphasized to reduce use of chemicals for conservation of vegetables and colouring and ripening of fruits.

Former PCCF Bijay Ketan Patnaik presided over the seminar where CRRI Entomology Deparntment’s Principal Scientist Dr K Rajsekhar Rao attended as chief guest.

At the outset, OES secretary Dr Jayakrushna Panigrahi delivered the welcome address. Prof P Seetaram Patra gave a brief note on the objectives of the seminar.
