Mamata Dehury of Kalinga Vihar in the Chhend Colony here attempted to commit suicide after being insulted in public by a money lender on Thursday. With severe burn injuries, she has been admitted in the IGH Burn Centre.
Sources said Mamata had brought a hand loan of Rs30,000 at an interest rate of 20 per cent per month from one laxmi of the Basanti Colony and invested the amount in her husband’s Chowmin Stall.
On Thursday, laxmi called for Mamata to her house and asked her to return the loan amount. But as she expressed her inability to return the money instantly, laxmi slapped her and snatched away her mobile in presence of others. Soon, insulted Mamata returned home and asked her husband to return the loan amount.
But her husband told her that they should not discuss the matter on Kartik Purnima day (Thursday). Mamata soon poured Kerosene on her body and put her on fire. Her neighbours rushed her to the IGH.
