At least 20 coal carrying wagons of two goods trains caught fire here on Saturday. The fire is believed to have broken out in the two trains, while they were on way to Bissam Cuttack from Rayagada near Kalyansinghpur station, about 15 km from here.

After noticing the flames, the authorities detained the trains in the next station at Therubali. By that time, about 16 wagons of one train had caught fire, while in the other, four wagons had been engulfed.

No one was injured, nor was the rail traffic hampered. The cause of the fire is stated to be extreme heat wave condition in the district, as mercury level hovered over 40 degree Celsius on Saturday. Fire brigade from Rayagada and Bissam Cuttack were pressed into service and efforts were on to extinguish the blaze, the sources said.
