The growth rate in the industry sector in the State has been decreasing for the last four years due to the slowdown in global economy, fall in manufacturing and construction activities, mining sector slowdown and problems in the power and industry sectors.
Industries Minister Dibya Sahankar Mishra informed this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJD member Soumya Ranjan Patnaik on Friday.
While the growth rate in the industry sector was 33.2 per cent in 2016-17, it came down to 8.6 per cent in 2017-18 and 6.7 per cent in 2018-19 and it is expected to be 5.9 per cent in 2019-20, according to the Economic Survey.
The Minister said that increase in industry growth rate basically depends on the growth in five sectors such as mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas and water supply and construction.
While the mining and quarrying sector growth rate decreased from 13.74 per cent in 2016-17 to 3.38 per cent tin 2017-18, the manufacturing sector growth rate slipped from 33.17 per cent in 2016-17 to 5.92 per cent in 2018-19.
The growth rate in the electricity, gas and water supply sectors has also remained irregular during the last two years as they depend on mining activities.
