A day after the Odisha Administrative Tribunal (OAT) quashed the provision of 27-per cent reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC), the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to recommend inclusion of Odisha Reservation of Post and Services (Socially and Educationally Backward Classes) Act 2008 in 9th Schedule of the Constitution.
In a letter to Patnaik, SP State unit president Rabi Behera said the OAT has created confusion by quashing the 27 per cent reservation for the SEBC. The repercussion of the order will affect almost 50 per cent of the State's population.
The letter further mentioned that the Union Government has provisioned 27 per cent reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) from August 7, 1990 in Central Government johs. Besides, it has reserved 27 per cent seats in all academic, polytechnic institutes including IITs, AIIMS and IIMS for the OBC students. But, the State Government has not provided any seat reservation for the SEBC students in State Government-run colleges and universities for admission.
Tamil Nadu has got its SEBC reservation included in the 9th Schedule.
