‘Raids on Babus can hardly stop corruption'

SAMBALPUR: If apprehending one or two corrupt  officers of senior rank with just few lakhs of rupees  can stop corruption, then there could be no better foolishness than this. “This is just eyewash designed to befool people and make media coverage,” remarked Gauri Shankar Mohnaty, a senior advocate here. “Corruption charges of hundreds of crores or rupees with documentary evidence are there in the State and I have intimated the concerned authorities, 5T Secretary and Vigilance department as to it. Why is there no inquiry and action against such officers,” asked Mohanty. “When premature retirement is done in case of the junior officers, why is it not being applicable to IAS and IPS officers of the State who are neck-deep in corruption and I have apprised the CM and the competent authorities regarding it," Mohanty added. Civil engineers of the State in any department have got ample opportunities to amass money illegally. There are also departments like Revenue, Commercial Tax, Transport, Health, Forest, Works, Irrigation, RD etc where corruption is at the peak and officers make money easily. If at least 20 percent of the total works of each department, and civil works in particular, could be reviewed then corruption and easy money making by officers could be brought to light," suggested Manas Ranjan Baksi, central coordinator of a forum, Paschimancal Manch. Baksi said that a cement concrete road anywhere in the State hardly sustains for one year. This is because of the poor quality works. “If such works could be reviewed, then making money through unfair means would be next to impossible,” he opined.
