Former MLA Bhoii passes away
Jagatsinghpur: Former MLA Rabindra Nath Bhoi passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar late on Friday night. The BJD leader was undergoing treatment after he fell sick. He was 54. Bhoi was elected to the Assembly from Tirtol in 2009. Reportedly, he was in the race of the upcoming bye-election for Tirtol after demise of BJD MLA Bishnu Das.
New Balangir Sub-Collector appointed
Bhubaneswar: Sudhakar Nayak, OAS, who was Deputy Secretary in General Administration and Public Grievance Department in Ganjam district, has been appointed as the new Sub-Collector of Balagir following suspension of former Sub-Collector Sanjay Mishra after a woman employee accused him of sexual harassment. This apart, Pramod Sahoo, OAs, who was earlier deputed as Additional Project Director in District Rural Development Agency, Khordha, has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer in Bhubaneswar.
2 young brothers drown in canal in Jajpur
Jajpur: Tragedy struck a family of Meduakul village under Bari block in Jajpur district when two young brothers drowned while crossing a canal on a banana tree-made raft on Saturday morning. Subhrajit Behera (24) and Mitul (29) were crossing the canal to collect grass for their goats. One of them slipped into deep water while another suffered critical injuries as the raft overturned. Fire brigade staffs with the help of locals rescued the two and rushed them to a hospital at Bari, where doctors declared them dead.
Balangir plantation drive kicks off
Balangir: A plantation drive was kicked off in Balangir town on Balangir- Patnagarh road with Divisional Forest Officer Sameer Satpathy formally inaugurating it by planting a tree. The Odisha Forest Development Corporation has taken up the roadside plantation from Little Flower School onward, informed the DFO. Local MLA Narasingha Mishra has suggested for planting flowering trees on the divider on the National Highway. About 1,000 flower bearing trees would be planted, he added.
B’pur police bust diamond looters’ gang
Brahmapur: In a remarkable achievement, the Brahmapur Town police have busted a looters’ gang by arresting five miscreants and recovering costly diamonds from them. A few days back, the miscreants had fired at an elderly businessman’s eyes and snatched away diamonds from him. The K Nuagaon police managed to arrest three of them. However, the main accused and another miscreant were on the run. The police arrested the two and recovered stolen hard metals from them on Friday night. They were identified as Rinku Majhi and Hrushikesh Padhy.
NRI donates water purifier to geriatric home
Brahmapur: Dr Y Venkat Rao, an NRI from Brahmapur established at Florida in the USA, has donated a Ro water plant- cum- drinking water purifier machine to the Biswaniketan Geriatric Home at Ramchandrapur here. Social activists EN Murthy and P Kuchi Babu inaugurated the machine in the presence of geriatric home head and Mahan Sangh president Sushant Sabat and other functionaries. Sabita Sahu proposed a vote of thanks.
JSpur scribe dies of cardiac arrest
Jagatsinghpur: Senior scribe Samir Ranjan Dash from Kujanga area died following cardiac arrest on Thursday night. Dash suffered chest pain, when immediately he was shifted to the Kujanga CHC for treatment but doctor declared him brought dead.
Motorcyclist hit by truck in JSpur dies
Jagatsinghpur: A motorcyclist was killed when a truck hit his vehicle on the Cuttack-Paradip road under the Tirtol police limits in Jagatsinghpur district on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Manas Bhuyan, a resident of Kurtanga under the Raghunathpur police limits in the district.
Jagatsinghpur youth drowns
Jagatsinghpur: A youth drowned while catching fish on Friday here. The deceased was identified as Mahima Swain from Gadakujanga village near Kujang. On Thursday he had gone to river Mahanga for fishing where he was swept away by currents of river. Local fishermen and fire personnel from Kujanga launched a search drive and fished the body out on Friday.
