The Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), medical college of the SOA University here was closed sine die after tension prevailed in the campus for hours over the death of a student, who was found hanging in his hostel room on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Manish Dhala, a first year MBBS student of the IMS-SUM Hospital under the Khandagiri police limits, police officials said.
The SOA authorities declared the college closed sine die and directed boarders to vacate their hostels immediately after angry students went on rampage breaking glasspanes and staging a dharna in the campus for over four hours.
Hundreds of first-year MBBS students held a protest in front of Hostel-1 demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the SOA University.
later, the students ransacked the hostel properties after failing to get their demands fulfilled.
According to reports, Dhala was found hanging from the ceiling in his hostel room. When Dhala’s friends didn’t get response from him, they entered the room by breaking open the lock of the door and found his body hanging from the ceiling.
“They informed other students and the hostel warden who rushed to the spot. Police were also informed,” a senior police official said.
He was rushed to the SUM casualty department, where he was declared brought dead.
One of Dhala’s friends said the deceased was known to be a good student and his colleagues always found him friendly and active. “He had informed me earlier that the college authorities had banned him from the semester as he had got less number in one of the papers in the internal examination. He was disturbed for the last few days and might have taken this extreme step in a state of depression,” said the friend on the condition of anonymity.
