Villagers retrieved the bodies of the deceased, said district Collector Ranjan Das. The deceased were identified as Strughan Samal (46)  of Arua and Kulamani Samal (56) of Khajuria village.

“We will take necessary actions against the persons who illegally engaged the workers in the illegal quarry work,” added the Collector.

Dharmasala MlA Pranab Balabantaray and senior officials, including the Collector, rushed to the spot after getting information about the mishap. Around 200 villagers, including women, gherored the officials and demanded immediate arrest of the quarry contractor.

It may be recalled that nine years ago, 14 quarry workers had also been killed in a cave-in incident in an illegal quarry at village Rangeitangala under Nijigard gram panchayat in Sukinda block of Jajpur district.
