Illegal detention: NHRC puts K'jhar SP on notice

Published on:

Taking a serious view of the illegal detention of a man by the Keonjhar police, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Keonjhar SP.

Acting on a petition filed by Human Rights Watch Secretary Sangita Swain, the commission has directed the SP to submit report within four weeks.

The petitioner alleged that police officials allegedly detained one Satya Prasad Mohanta for five days and tortured him in forest guest houses in the district without any reasonable reasons.

“Neither they forward him to the court not registered FIR against him. Violating laws, the police officials physically tortured him resulting in injury in his hydrosol,” alleged the petitioner.

The petitioner further alleged that police personnel arrested him from the hospital bed at the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital.

The petitioner has urged the commission to take disciplinary/departmental/criminal proceeding against the concerned police officials and a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the victim.
