Ib power station paralysed

Published on:

Power generation at the Odisha Power Generation Corporation’s (OPGC) Ib Thermal Power Station at Banaharpali has come to a grinding halt after its second unit was also shut down on Saturday after the OPGC authorities detected leakage of hydrogen from its generator unit. The power station has two units with generation capacity of 210 MW of power each.

Generation from the power station’s first unit has stopped since August 28 after its generator transformer was burnt in a lightning. OPGC sources said it would take around eight days to get the second unit repaired. However, the OPGC authorities were noncommittal on the number of days it would take for repair of the first unit as the job would require the services of engineers from outside the State. The sources said requisition has been sent to the BHEl to send experts.
