Under the impact of cyclone Yaas, Keonjhar district received heavy rains on Wednesday, while in Bileipda area hundreds of people were rendered homeless due to water-logging.
The incident happened at an under-construction bridge on BilipadaMurganal, connecting NH 215. The contractor company had made temporary arrangements for drainage of water by using hume pipes. However, due to heavy rain the pipes could not discharge the rain water, leading to inundation of a large swath of surrounding area. The local people tried to cut the road to drain out the water but vain. This caused drowning of dozens of houses in the locality and ahuge loss of property.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Dr Murali Manohar Sharma demanded immediate measures by the district administration to shift the people to safer location and provide them with cooked food, besides permanent arrangement for drainage of water on the construction site.
