Huge quantity of seized brown sugar destroyed

The Drug Disposal Committee on Monday destroyed a huge quantity of brown sugar weighing around 4.1kg at a designated incinerator.

The contraband was destroyed in the presence of Special Task Force (STF) Bhubaneswar SP, Khordha Deputy Collector, Superintendent of Excise, Scientific Officers of the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFL) and Member of State Pollution Control Board.(SPCB)

According to officials, the seized drug was first authenticated and certificated by the concerned court and handed over to the Drug Disposal Committee for disposal.

In the recent times during the massive crackdown against the trade of narcotics, especially brown sugar and ganja by police, there had been a huge piling up of the seized drugs.

As the trial of narcotics cases takes time, the seized contrabands remain stocked at police stations exposed to all kinds of vulnerabilities. Because of some procedural and technical issues, the seized drugs could not be disposed of.

In this scenario, the STF approached the High Court with a prayer for direction to resolve the issues involved in disposing of the seized drugs.

Till date, the STF has destructed 12 kg 815 grams of brown sugar in 10 cases and 16 quintals of ganja in four cases.
