Huge fortunes in Sarathi's name unravelled

After the conclusion of the fifth day of interrogation of godman Sarathi Baba alias Santosh Raul on Thursday, the Crime Branch police have unearthed huge movable and immovable properties in his name.

According to sources, the investigating sleuths have seized at least 50 property documents in the name of the Satyam Charitable Trust floated by Raul in the name of his adopted son Satyam Sekhar Raul.

While two plots in the name of the trust have been detected in Baleswar and Bhadrak districts, the sources revealed that the trust was in possession of 5.25 acres of land at different localities in the State.

The sleuths have also seized four vehicles in the name of the trust. The Crime Branch has entrusted a revenue official to assess the cost of the landed properties registered in the name of the trust.

While no official statement is coming forward regarding the interrogation of the Baba and seizure of properties, sources said at least 40 persons have by now been examined.

The cops are, however, not so far able to trace the Baba's absconding adopted son, who has reportedly gone underground ever since his father was arrested last week. While it has not been established yet whether the Crime Branch is looking for the junior Raul to arrest him, his detention has been necessitated for quizzing to corroborate some statements of the Baba.

On the other hand, the prosecution has already frozen at least 30 bank accounts operated by the Baba, and their combined balance is pegged at over Rs 2.55 crore so far.

Meanwhile, Crime Branch personnel on Thursday seized three vehicles, including a pickup van and a Bolero, of Raul from his ashram at Barimul near here, besides seizing some documents.

The measurement of the ashram's temple, building, boundary walls, sculptures and roads was completed by the R&B Department in the presence of Crime Branch personnel, but the valuation of the properties was yet to be done, informed official sources.

Meanwhile, the Crime Branch team has asked the SBI College Road branch manager to take steps for opening the locker of the fake Baba's adopted son Satyam Sekhar Raul.

According to branch manager Manoj Ranjan Das, Satyam Sekhar opened the locker in July this year and has used it only once. "If Satyam does not come to the bank then as per the bank guidelines steps would be taken to break open the locker," Das said.
