House rocked over inaction on Ganjam gangrape

Published on:

The State Assembly on Friday witnessed frequent adjournments till late afternoon as Opposition Congress and BJP members created uproar and kept demanding that the Chief Minister make a statement on the gangrape of a minor tribal girl in Ganjam district and a Crime Branch probe into the case.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra termed the incident as very shameful for the whole country. He said such an incident would have rocked the nation if it had occurred in New Delhi.

He alleged that police didn’t take any action against the main accused as he belongs to the ruling BJD. “I condemn the incident. As it is a very sensitive issue, the Chief Minister should make a statement on the matter and order a Crime Branch probe,” Mishra demanded and sought a ruling from the Speaker.

As Speaker Niranjan Pujari didn’t pay any heed, the Congress and BJP members rushed into the Well of the House and shouted slogans. Unable to run the proceedings, Pujari adjourned the House for one hour at 11.36 am.

When the House reassembled at 12.36 pm, BJP legislature Party leader KV Singh Deo too raised the issue and made the same demand. As the Speaker did not listen, the Opposition members trooped into the Well of the House and shouted slogans. As the scenario persisted, the Speaker adjourned the House three times till 4.08 pm. However, the Chief Minister announced a CB probe into the incident in the evening.
