Hostels to be removed from Cuttack residential area

Residential houses converted into commercial complexes like hostels, shops, restaurants and service stations in the satellite city of Abhinav Bidanasi here would be dismantled soon. A direction to this effect was issued by the Orissa High Court on Friday asking the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) to implement the order within two months. Disposing of a writ petition filed by advocate Patitapaban Panda, the court asked the Commissionerate police to extend requisite cooperation to the CDA in removing the illegal structures and establishments coming up in the residential locality of Abhinav Bidanasi. Justice Kumari Sanju Panda also asked the CDA to immediately shift the city bus-stand from the residential locality to nearby open space.

The court in December last had asked the CDA to initiate steps in dismantling the students’ hostels from the locality as they have come up illegally violating the Orissa Municipal Corporation Act-2003 and the Orissa Development Authority Act of 1982. In pursuant to this order, the CDA had issued notices to as many 100 establishments, including 40 hostels.  “Take a decision on the notices issued to plot allotters, who have deviated the approved plan and terms and conditions of the allotment as expeditiously as possible within a period of two months,” said the High Court order. The petitioner had maintained that some unscrupulous persons by virtue of false affidavits have managed to obtain residential plots in the area and constructed multistoried buildings and rented them for hostel purposes.
