Thanks to the honesty of two girl student traffic volunteers (STVs) of the city, a transport businessman of Bayalishmouza of the Cuttack Sadar area got back his lost money amounting over
Rs1 lakh.
Subash Naik had withdrawn Rs2 lakh from a bank in the city on May 4. After repaying a loan instalment of Rs30,000 in another bank, he was travelling towards link Road by his motorcycle keeping a bundle of 55 Rs2000 notes (Rs1, 10,000) in his trouser pocket and remaining Rs60,000 in his shirt pocket.
“The bundle of currency notes from his trouser pocket had dropped on the road near the Madhupatna traffic post which was found by two STVs, Sujata Panda and Rashmita Behera, who were performing duty at the spot at that time,” said city Traffic ACP PK Dalai.
Since the two STVs could not locate the owner of the money, it was deposited with the nearby Madhupatna police station with VHF messages sent to all the police stations of the city informing about the money with the purpose of locating the actual owner, Dalai said.
After learning about it from media reports, Subash on Monday approached the Madhupatna police and, on proper verification from banks and his accounts, the money was handed over to him in the presence of the two STVs, Dalai said on Tuesday.
While Subash profusely thanked the STVs and was learnt to have given them certain monetary rewards, Sujata and Rashmita were sincerely congratulated and felicitated by the Commissionerate police for their diligent duty and honesty.
City DCP Sanjeeb Arora had felicitated Sujata and Rashmita, who are now pursuing Plus III at the JKBK College here, for their exemplary behaviour.
Along with these two girls, about another hundred students from the city colleges are now working as STVs.
For a duty of an hour of their own choice in day, the STVs are getting Rs100. Road users in general are appreciating the performances of the STVs, a concept introduced by the Commissionerate police last year.
