Home Ministry urged for impartial probe

Rights Activist Srikumar Mahanta has urged the Union Home Ministry for an impartial investigation into the 12-year-old Sumanta Mahar murder that occurred at Mahibala village under Boudh district’s Kantamal block on February 2.

Sumanta, a Class-VII student of the Project Upper Primary School, was allegedly killed by some persons in a jungle on the day. Earlier, family members had found a blood-blemished stone and, apprehending that their son was killed, lodged an FIR at the Kantamal police station. After six days, villagers found the dead body in a nearby forest.

In a memorandum sent to the Home Ministry, the rights activist mentioned that the police have arrested some guiltless people instead of main offender as a political link is involved in the killing.

He urged the Ministry to direct the Director General of Police of the State to conduct an appropriate and impartial investigation into the incident by transferring IIC Naresh Pradhan of the Kantamal PS.

He has also urged the Ministry to allot a house under Indira Awas Yojana to the victim’s family at the earliest and provide Rs5 lakh as compensation to the family.
