The annual bird census at the Hirakud Dam Reservoir under the Hirakud Wildlife Division was completed on Sunday.

A total of 95, 912 birds of different species have been spotted at the reservoir, comprising water area of 936 square kilometer, in the current year’s census, informed DFO (Wildlife) Sudeep Nayak. However, the species-wise figure is yet to be prepared, he added.

“Due to conducive atmosphere and safe sojourn at the reservoir and in the power channel down to it, the number of migratory birds has increased by 40-45 per cent during the current year in comparison to the previous year,” the DFO further said.

A total of 14 teams with 70 members, including a few ornithologists were engaged to conduct the survey at the reservoir and the power channel. last year, only nine units had conducted the survey, the DFO informed.

“With the increase in the number, it is cleared that the winged guests find Hirakud a safe place for their winter stay. We are conscious for their safety and discourage poaching,” ranger Madan Sharma said.
