In a major breakthrough, the Chandrasekharpur police on Thursday arrested a high-profile burglar from Sarala Nagar in the laxmisagar area.

The accused was identified as Sanjay Kumar Nisank (30), a resident of Otri Tala Sahi under the Khordha police station. Police seized jewellery, electronic goods, mobile phones and other valuables worth Rs 60 lakh from his possession.

Besides, the police also seized 778 grams of gold and 796 grams of silver ornaments, cash of over Rs 39 lakh, 43 mobile phones, 29 watches, 26 laptops, a bike, lED TVs, tablets and other valuables, which Nisank had looted from several households over a period of two years.

Acting on a complaint filed by one Swapnajit Mukherji of Saileshree Vihar, the police launched a probe and zeroed in on the accused by tracking his cell phone.

Sources said Sanjay, a BBA student, was a lone wolf and did not have any associates. His modus operandi was simple. He used to break into the houses in absence of the owners by using some simple tools and always used to wear a helmet to conceal his identity from the CCTV cameras. He had plans to sell the stolen goods on OlAX; and with that money, he had plans to start a business.

Police said the accused was involved in a series of burglary cases in several areas including Chandrasekharpur and Infocity.

“A case has been registered at the Chandrasekharpur police station and further investigation is on into the incident,” DCP Anup Sahu said.
