Amid Covid-19-driven job loss, a Sarpanch of Khaira block is providing livelihoods to returnee migrant workers through MGNREGA.
Mayadhar Das, Sarpanch of Achuyata GP, has engaged the migrant workers in works under four programmes involving Rs 19 lakh. He has engaged his fellow villagers, who are migrant workers, in four different village road works totaling 2.4 km.
Under the scheme, each worker is paid a wage of Rs 207 per day and the work would continue for about 45 days.
The returnees are content with the work and the wage. The Sarpanch said that he would further take initiative for projects which could be implemented through MGNREGA.
“154 workers belonging to low and marginal income groups returned from different States during the Corona lockdown. After completing the mandatory lockdown period when they are sitting idle in the want of a job and don’t wish to return to their work place they are engaged in the NREGS works. Further, in consultation with the local BDO and Collector, I would try to implement more projects and provide job opportunities,” said Das.
