Despite the Government’s claim of having provided better healthcare in every part of the State, a pregnant woman delivered a child under open sky at Sorada dispensary under Nuagaon block on Sunday due to non-availability of hospital staff.
The locals lodged a complaint with the Chief District Medical Officer, demanding posting of at least a staff member who stayed permanently in the dispensary complex.
Sources said Susama lohar of Koilatolli area under Sorada Gram Panchayat had developed labour pain on Sunday. At about 11.30 am, she was rushed to the Sorada health centre with the help of a local Asha Karmi, but after reaching at the health centre, it was found that the hospital was locked and no one present. Susama was suffering from serious pain and needed a doctor’s or nurse’s help. But none was there to provide her the much- needed service. It was not possible to shift her to any far-off hospitals like the Rourkela medical, either. After about fifteen minutes of labor pain, she delivered a child under the open sky in front of the health centre.
Soon, people grew angry over the nonchalant health administration and the sorry plight of the poor lady. Some of them contacted the Sub Divisional Medical Officer and the Chief District Medical Officer and lodged complaint against the Sorada hospital staff members who most did a bunk.
The locals alleged that the Sorada health center remained closed most of the time as the pharmacists posted here was staying in Rourkela and no service was available when he left for his home. “We have been demanding for posting of at least one pharmacist, who will stay here so that the emergency service can be attended,” said Bijay Kisan, a native of Sorada.
CDMO Sundergarh BK Nayak dubbed the incident as unfortunate. “I have asked SDMO Panposh to conduct an inquiry and submit a report regarding the matter,” Nayak said.
