Helmet sale rises as cops intensify checks

Of late, there is a spurt in the sale of helmets here after the police launched a campaign against helmetless driving by two-wheeler riders.

In fact, shops selling automobile spare parts are stocking up expensive helmets priced from Rs 800 onwards. These helmets are selling like hot cakes as people fear being penalised.

“We used to sell helmets once in a blue moon. But now the sales have gone up, said a shopkeeper Kuna Bhoi. Currently Bhoi sells about 15 to 20 helmets per day.

On the other hand by taking advantage of “No Helmet, No Fuel” rule, some businessman are selling helmets without ISI mark on it.

Social worker Durjodhan Kumbhar said there should be some regulations to check the efficiency of helmets sold on the roadside. He said such helmets can save one from paying fines but not from head injuries in case of an accident.

Meanwhile, surprise checks by police have compelled reckless drivers to put a check on over speeding.
