Heavy rainfall hits normal life

Incessant rains occurred at several places in the State for the second consecutive day on Saturday, throwing normal life out of gear. The State has been witnessing heavy rainfall for the past two days due to the impact of a low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, said Met office here on Saturday.

According to a Met official, Daringbadi town in Kandhamal district recorded the State’s highest rainfall of 83 mm since Friday while Phulbani town in the same district recorded 65 mm of rain during the same period.

Similarly, Balangir town recorded 59.6 mm followed by Gopalpur with 58 mm of rain, the official said. State capital Bhubaneswar received 25.9 mm of rain, he added.

Reports said that some villages in Subarnapur and Nayagarh districts were surrounded by water due to heavy rainfall. Hundreds of acres of paddy field in the districts got submerged in water, sources said.

Traffic was disrupted on a national highway close to the city and schools witnessed low attendance at several places due to the heavy rainfall, said the reports.

The Met office in its weather bulletin predicted that rains would continue across most parts of the State during the next 24 hours due a well-marked low Pressure Area over north-west Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coasts.

The bulletin also said that extremely heavy rainfall would occur at one or two places in south Odisha, while heavy rainfall would lash at one or two places in north Odisha in the next 24 hours.

Under its impact, gusty surface wind with speed reaching up to 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65kmph may prevail along and off Odisha Coast, the bulletin warned while advising fishermen not to venture into sea.
