Health and Family Welfare Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak on Tuesday sought a detailed report from the Health Director on the death of a pregnant destitute woman and her unborn child at the Capital Hospital here on Sunday night, allegedly due to neglect.

While the State Commission for Women (SCW) has issued summons to three persons in the matter, the Minister has warned the Health Director against repetition of such incidents in future.

The destitute pregnant woman, who was rescued from the Astaranga area and admitted in the hospital by a social service organisation earlier in the day, died after allegedly being left unattended for hours.

Sources said the SCW issued summons to two doctors of the Capital Hospital and the in-charge of the police outpost at the hospital in connection with the shocking incident.

The pregnant woman, who was admitted in the Capital Hospital on Saturday, was referred to the SCB Medical College Hospital (SCBMCH), Cuttack after her condition deteriorated.

However, she was spotted near the Nayapalli Durga Puja Mandap on Sunday in a serious condition by a group of eunuchs and was re-admitted in the Capital Hospital by the Ruchika Helpline at around 5pm.

According a doctor report, the infant had died in the womb by the time the woman reached the hospital. The woman died at 11 pm.

A four-member team of the SCW led by its Chairperson lopamudra Buxipatra visited the Capital Hospital on Monday to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

The team sought documents from the hospital authorities and had interrogated Capital Hospital Deputy Director Dr Binod Mishra and several other doctors and officials in connection with the incident.
