HC grants bail to Joydeep Nayak

The Orissa High Court allowed the bail application of arrested senior IPS officer Joydeep Nayak on Tuesday. The IG-rank officer of the Tripura cadre was arrested by the Odisha Vigilance police from Uttar Pradesh last month on corruption charges.

“Since the High Court orders and the relevant documents could not be produced before the jail authorities on Tuesday, Nayak is likely to walk free from jail on Wednesday,” said his counsel Siddharth Mishra.

Nayak, on an inter-cadre deputation here between 2011and 2016 and while officiating as IG of Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC), had allegedly embezzled Rs88 lakh meant for computer skill development of SC and ST students. Four others, including a senior OPS officer, are also arrested in the case.

Granting bail, Justice Shatrughna Pujahari asked the suspended IPS officer to submit his passport with the Special (Vigilance) Court in Cuttack. He was also asked to go on bail after furnishing bail bond of Rs1 lakh with two solvent sureties and a property bond of Rs50,000.
