HC begins hearing on plea to release Vizag doctor

Hearing on the habeas corpus writ filed by arrested Visakhapatnam doctor’s wife remained inconclusive in the Odisha High Court on Thursday. The Division Bench of Justices Indrajit Mohanti and Sangam Kumar Sahoo adjourned the hearing of the case to Monday as the petitioner counsel could not finish his arguments on the day.

Vehemently objecting to the arrest and detention of SevenHills Hospital director N Prabhakar Babu by the Cuttack city police, his wife’s counsel Satyabrata Pradhan argued in the court that the Odisha police do not have any legal sanction to arrest a neighbouring State’s doctor. “It’s only the appropriate authority under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act has the power to take action against Babu,” Pradhan said, adding that since no such authority has taken note of the same, the arrest made by the Cuttack police would be termed as “brutal” and the detention was illegal.
