Expressing deep concern over the State Government’s attempt to pass the “undemocratic” Odisha Police Bill 2015 in the Assembly, a delegation of the Civil Society Forum on Human Rights on Thursday met Governor Dr SC Jamir and sought his intervention. A four-member team led by rights activist Akhanda submitted a memorandum to the Governor and discussed various Sections of the Bill with him and explained its impact.
“We have been saying that the Bill will lead to a Police State in Odisha as it has no provision to make police accountable either to the district administration or to people. We urge the Governor to kindly review the Bill keeping in view the Constitutional provisions along with the Central laws and the objective of the judgement of the Supreme Court in the Prakash Singh case and requested him to recall the Police Bill and to exercise his power and place the Bill for wider public debate and consultation before it is passed in the Odisha legislative Assembly,” said Akhanda.
