Guv urged for OHRC chief appointment

Many civil society members on Monday urged Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal to intervene and direct the Chief Minister to appoint OHRC Chairperson and members at the earliest.

Members led by Chandra Nath Dani handed over a memorandum to the Governor in this regard.

“As the last Chairperson of the OHRC, retired Justice RK Patra, had demitted office on November 23, 2012.

Similarly, it is five years since the two members demitted office. The vacancies have severe effect in upholding human rights in the State. Poor people, who are the victims of human rights violations, have been affected.

As on date, over 15,000 cases are pending with the OHRC.

They demanded that an open, transparent and merit-based selection process should be undertaken for appointment of the Chairperson and members and equal representation should be given to all sections of the society.
