Guv for quality academicians as varsity V-Cs

Coming down heavily on the manner in which some universities are functioning in the State, Governor and Chancellor of universities SC Jamir on Friday said a quality leader with serial studying whom the society respects as an academician should be selected as the Vice-Chancellor of a university which would automatically solve 50 per cent of problems.

Addressing the valedictory session of a consultative workshop on ‘Needs Assessment and Strategic Planning for leadership’ under the RUSA, Dr Jamir came up with a number of suggestions that can have wide ramifications in the State higher education sector, especially, selection of VCs and their ways of governing universities.

“The search committees selecting university VCs

should comprise eminent persons from a vast spectrum covering all-India landscape,” said the Governor, adding that he has already started the process, and if it is executed in Odisha like in Maharashtra, it would benefit immensely.

Endorsing Jamir’s views, Prof Venkatesh Kumar of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences elaborated how Jamir revamped the university education in Maharashtra by involving all stakeholders.

Among others, Higher Education Principal Secretary GK Dhal and HRD Ministry’s Director Harpreet Singh also spoke on the occasion.
