With 10 mild tremors felt in the last four days, residents of Dhenkanal, especially Govindpur and its surrounding areas, are terrified to sleep in their homes at night.
The fear has increased manifold after the earth shook for three seconds at 2 am on Wednesday. Tremors had also been felt at 6: 47 pm on Tuesday evening.
Though the repeated tremors have not caused any casualties, they have led to cracks in the mud huts in
villages.
A Geological Survey of India (GSI) team from Bhubaneswar visited Dhenkanal district on a fact-finding mission on Tuesday.
Dhenkanal, Govindpur, Manikpur, Baldiabaghi and other nearby areas are facing intermittent mild earthquakes.
The villagers claim that the tremors are preceded by a loud sound coming from
the ground.
No awareness programme has been initiated either by the Central or State Government on how to deal with this
phenomenon.
People have approached the district authorities for guidance, but the latter have no explanation to offer.
