The Bhubaneswar Government Railway Police (GRP) on Friday forwarded the main accused in the Nayagarh girl attack case to a court here and urged the court to allow taking the accused on a two-day remand for further questioning.
The youth, Abinash Mohanty (20), a Plus III second year (Botany honours) student of the Nayagarh Autonomous College and a resident of Saradhapur in Nayagarh district, had been arrested by the GRP on Thursday for attacking the girl, who is a native of Godisahi of Balugaon in Nayagarh district and also a Plus III student (Commerce) of the same college. The girl was drugged before being attacked on Saturday near platform number four of the Bhubaneswar railway station, said GRP IIC Soubhagya Kumar Swain.
Swain said both the victim and the attacker knew each other from Class VIII and had a love relationship since then. The girl had been insisting on the youth for marriage during last few months, but the latter was not in a mood to give any consent. On the occasion of Dussehra, the accused brought the girl to Bhubaneswar and stayed in a lodge at Ashok Nagar. They had physical relation, and after the accused took the girl to a lonely place near the railway station by drugging her, Swain added.
The GRP IIC said Mohanty bought a knife from a nearby shop and started cutting different parts of the girl with an intention to kill her. When the girl fell down after losing consciousness, he left the place, Swain added.
Swain said the police found the girl the very next day and admitted her to the Capital Hospital and then shifted her to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. The victim is still undergoing treatment at the SCB, he added.
“We got clues from the girl’s call details. After tracking Mohanty’s mobile phone, we nabbed him,” said Swain.
