Gritty Ganjam minor girl stops own marriage

Protesting the child marriage system, a minor girl has set an example by stopping her own marriage.

Despite her family’s and relatives’ pressure, Rutu Nahak (14), daughter of Narayan Nahak of Chadhiapalli village under Aska block in Ganjam district, showed her grit and went against their decision to get her married.

According to reports now coming to limelight, the parents of Rutu, a Class-IX student, had fixed her marriage on March 9. However, Rutu had opposed their decision to get married in such an early age. She decided to approach the Child line to stop the marriage.

On March 17, Rutu had called on child helpline number 1098 and informed about her family’s decision. She pleaded for stopping the marriage as she wanted to continue her study.

After getting the phone call, Child line members came to Rutu’s rescue and handed her over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). With efforts of both the Child line and the CWC, Rutu’s parents realised their wrong decision and her marriage was stopped and she continued her study.
