Though the new generation youths have been adopting new methods like SMS, e-cards and social networking media to greet their near and dear ones on the New Year and express their wishes, but still greeting cards continues to rule the hearts of many. As a result, the greeting card vendors are doing a brisk sale this year too.
Jyoti Satapathy, a card vendor of Sanamangala Chowk, stated that though the teenagers are sending wishes and messages through mobiles and computers, yet the traditional method of sending a colourful card still gains currency since this medium is livelier.
The greeting card brings with it messages tinged with emotion and feeling, which is not found in SMSs and e-mails, he informed. According to Alakarani Nayak, a Plus III first year student of Birupa College, the SMSes and e-cards are devoid of feelings. On the other hand, you can get the care and love for a person better conveyed in a greeting card. Besides, the durability of a greeting card is more, she said.
“This year, greeting cards ranging from `1 to `100 are available in my stall. Most of the customers are purchasing Archie’s love cards , eco-friendly cards and musical cards to express their New Year wishes along with messages ,” said a card vendor of the New Bus stand area.
Some gift houses of the township have also been doing good business for last several days. Most college goers are purchasing the greeting cards and gift items, said sources.
