GPO refuses to receive demonetised notes

Even though the Union Government announced that all banks and post offices shall receive the demonetised currency notes, the senior citizen pension holders are disappointed after being denied to deposit the scrapped high-value notes at the General Post Office (GPO) here.

The senior citizens, who are receiving their pension through saving accounts in the GPO, were denied by its officials to make deposits of the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes after standing in a long queue for hours whereas the non-pension holders were allowed to deposit big amounts in their saving accounts.

An old pension holder faced such a situation after standing in the queue for a time.

"I had received the pension amount in Rs 1000 currency notes on November 8 from the GPO. On that day, I had also withdrawn some cash in Rs 500 notes from my MIS account. After the Government announced the demonetisation of Rs 500 and 1000 notes, I came here to deposit the amount in my savings bank accounts. I stood in the queue for a long hour, but they refused to receive the demonetised notes from me. As today was a holiday, it was not possible to contact the Chief Post Master General," the pension holder said. "When approached, a senior postal official in New Delhi, he said that there is no difficulty in depositing the demonetised notes in the postal saving bank accounts," the senior citizen added.

However, some other post offices claimed that they are receiving the demonetised notes to deposit in the pension accounts.
