The labourer couple and their child from Kasinagar block in Gajapati district, who were kept as bonded labourers in a Malur-based brick kiln in Karnataka, were rescued on Wednesday by the labour Commission of Karnataka.

A team of the labour Department officials including labour Inspector of Malur lokesh J conducted a raid on the brick kiln and rescued the couple, Baburao Sabar (30) and his wife Bhagya (25), and their four-year-old son.

“As of now, no police case is filed against brick kiln owner Pillapa. He is denying the allegation against him,” said the labour Inspector.

After coming out of the kiln, Bhagya said the owner did not pay them wage for a very long time. “He did not allow us to go home either,” she added.

Odisha Cultural Association vice president Manoj Patra, who was present during the raid, said Pillapa owed the couple `13,000. The couple and their son would be sent back to Odisha on Thursday by train from Bangalore, he added.
