'Govt must take over pharmacy institute'

Published on:

The College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CPSs) at Mohuda in Brahmapur is passing through rough weather due to the differences between the members of its management.

For more than seven years (2006-13), the sole charge of the college management was vested in the hands of the Drug’s Controller of Odisha, who with his nominees reportedly managed the institute properly, claimed advocate and social activist Abani Kumar Gaya, who is also coordinator of the Manav Adhikar Surakhya Manch.

According to information available, the Ganjam-Phulbani Chemists and Druggists’ Association (GPCDA), meanwhile, has taken over the charge of management of the college once again.

However, Gaya alleged that the association had been in charge of the institute for a few years but it had resorted to rampant mismanagement due to nepotism. He said that now the association has once again taken over the management of the college with vested interest.

When the Ganjam-Phulbani Chemists and Druggists’ Association (GPCDA) had been managing the institute, the principal in nexus with the management members used to resort to highhandedness and tortured the junior staff members. He terminated and issued compulsory superannuation order on a few employees with vengeance, especially those who did not fall his line and objected to the monopoly of the management in running the college in clear violation of the established norms, sources said.

It may be recalled here that the management was split into two factions on the eve of the Silver Jubilee celebration of the college during the visit of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The Ganjam-Phulbani Chemists and Druggists’ Association (GPCDA) had embezzled lakhs of rupees of the college which had triggered resentment among the staff members. It had even led to a legal battle with one faction of the management taking the issue to the court against the other.

With complaints on the rise, then RDC (Southern Divison) Dr CS Kumar had conducted a probe into the alleged scam and in his enquiry report had underlined the importance and bare necessity of the college to be taken over by the Government.  Meanwhile, the coordinator of the Manav Adhikar Surakshya Manch strongly demanded that Government should take over the institute and order a Vigilance enquiry on misappropriation by the previous management.
