The State Government has adopted a special road safety rule with a target to reduce tragic road accidents by 20 per cent by the year 2020.
It was revealed at a review meeting on road safety held under chairmanship of Chief Secretary AP Padhi at the State Secretary on Friday.
The Chief Secretary directed National Highway and Works Department engineers to complete the short-term programme by December-end.
So far black spots (places where accidents are happening frequently) have been identified. While 64 black spots have been identified on State Highways, 15 on main district roads (MDR), nine on other district roads (ODR), one on urban road and 120 were identified on National Highways across the State.
Both short-term and long-term steps have been taken to check accidents at these places. As per short-term programme, rumblers, guard wall, signs, info plates and warnings are being put up. Similarly, expansion of roads, under-pass service road and fly-over bridges are being constructed as long-term steps.
Padhi too directed the police department to deploy traffic on accident-prone State Highways.
Among others, Development Commissioner R Balkrishnan, Home Special Secretary Sanjay Rastogi, Works Secretary Nalinikant Pradhan, Excise Secretary Bishnupad Sethi and Trasnport Commissioner Dr Chandra Sekhar Kumar were present.
