The students of the Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) on Monday held a dharna in front of the main gate protesting the criterion of 75 per cent attendance in classes to be eligible to fill up form for the coming semester examination.
They alleged that the sudden decision of the university will deprive\ nearly 2,000 students of appearing at the coming examination. “We know that this is an old eligibility criterion. But this was not in practice in the university since long. Hence, the sudden decision to implement it from the current semester has landed us in trouble,” said the students from the agitating spot.
“This is no doubt a healthy practice. But we demand to implement it from the next semester since in all previous semesters the university authorities were quite lenient on this matter,” they added.
However, the Vice-Chancellor of the university said over that he will consider the grievance of the students after he returns. The dharna was withdrawn after the assurance.
But interestingly, the students made a delicate allegation that most of the teachers are taking attendance of the students in a small piece of plane paper instead of the original attendance register which is also partly responsible for the present situation.
