Police on Sunday arrested a youth for allegedly raping a girl in the Sarangad High School hostel premises in Kandhamal district on Saturday evening. The accused was identified as Achyutananda Sahoo of PurunaSahi of Sarangad village. The matter came to the fore after the victim’s family members lodged an FIR at the Sarangad police station. Reports said the girl, a student of Plus III, along with her friends had gone to a nearby village on occasion of Raja festival on Friday.
As she was returning home by an auto-rickshaw on Saturday, bike-borne Sahoo intercepted the vehicle near the Sarangad High School and asked her to come with him.
The girl refused and ran towards a hostel, adjacent to the high school. However, the accused chased the girl and raped her. He fled from the spot leaving the girl unconscious on the spot. “Based on the complaint, the Sarangada police nabbed Sahoo. He has been sent for medical examination and would be forwarded to court on Monday,” informed G Udaygiri SDPO Amaresh Kumar Panigrahi.
