In a terrifying incident, a Plus Three second year girl student was allegedly killed and cremated secretly by none other than her father’s elder brother’s family members at Kumbharsahi under the Bada Bazaar police limits here on Friday morning.
The matter came to the fore only on Saturday night when neighbours, who were not informed about the girl’s death, filed an FIR at the police station seeking a proper inquiry into the incident. They told mediapersons that the girl was being sexually harassed and was pregnant at the time she ‘committed’ suicide.
When the incident was discussed in the public, the girl’s father’s elder brother Bhaskar Behera told reporters that his niece Mamina Behera committed suicide by hanging self in his house on Friday morning.
According to villagers, Mamina, daughter of Santosh Behera of Kharida, had been staying in Bhaskar’s house for the last 18 years. She gives tuition to small children and earn about Rs 5,000 per month to meet her study and other expenses. Bhaskar’s two sons reside with them. While elder son Sunil has two wives, younger son is an auto-rickshaw driver.
On Friday early morning, Bhaskar and his family members took Mamina’s body to the graveyard at Shreeram Nagar and then informed her parents that Mamina committed suicide by hanging and asked them to come directly to the graveyard. Then they cremated the body.
Despite attempts, neither the IIC nor the SDPO could be contacted.
